This summer, when playing in a World Series of Poker Daily Deepstack event, we got a chance to experience the Rio poker room. While the WSOP is certainly not the time to get a perfect read on the day-to-day operations of the Rio poker room, it did give us some sense of the atmosphere. To round out our review, we did a bit of research to determine the flow of cash and tournament action.Casino Setting

The 14 table Rio poker room is separated from the casino floor with a glass wall on one side and half walls on the other two sides. The ceiling is high and the air quality is good. The tables are pretty tightly packed in this small room and the lighting is dim throughout the room. The felts are in good shape, but had they not been swept recently the day we played. Chips were clean and very new looking. Chairs were comfortable, being adjustable, wheeled, and well padded.
During the WSOP event, several tables sat outside the walls of the poker room. It is not clear how many remain throughout the year. If the claim of 14 tables is accurate, some must remain. Unsurprisingly, it is smokier and louder at those tables, and it feels like you are playing in the aisle of the casino gaming room. Because pretty much, you are.Poker Room Staff
As we played in a Daily Deepstack that ran in conjunction with the WSOP, the dealers were mostly not regulars. That said, most were solid. The floors, however, ran an excellent tournament. There was a female floor who had the loudest and clearest voice I have heard in any poker room. Every level jump was clearly announced. There was no doubt about who held the authority in the room. Later, when they escorted the group from the Rio poker room to the convention hall for late tournament stages, she guided us like ducklings through the winding hallways beautifully.

The Rio poker room’s standing tournament has a $65 entry fee (with $22 rake -yes, Virginia, an abysmal 34% rate) for 5,000 chips and 20-minute blinds. It offers a $5 staff bonus for another 5,000 chips, so most people likely buy-in for $70, with the functional rake at a potentially record-setting 39%! The tournament guarantee is a whopping $500. This tournament runs four times per day (10am, 1pm, 4pm, and 9pm). This gives the savvy poker tournament player four opportunities to say “No freakin’ way” and find any number of better structures in town. In previous years, we have stopped into the Rio to ask about the tournaments and got the feeling that they rarely go off. In this setup, he can already make an estimate on his potential earnings. For instance, if he bets on red with £10 and the color comes up 5 times in a row, his total amount of winning would be £150. This is how it goes:
First bet – £10
Second bet – £10 + £10 = £20 (profit £10)
Third bet – £20 + £10 = £30 (profit £20)
The succeeding bets will bring £30, £40 and £50, respectively.
In the event that the player wagers £60 on the sixth spin but unfortunately fails to win, he will lose £60. Based on the original target profit (£150), he will have a clean earning of £90.Examples of Positive Progression Roulette Betting Systems
There are a lot of betting strategies that comes to mind when talking about positive progression system. To name a few: Base Two System, Base Five System, and One Half Up.
The 1-3-2-6 system is relatively straight-forward – especially if you have any experience using other betting or card-counting systems.
Here’s how this works:
*Place an even-money bet. For example, place a bet on black/red or even/odd in roulette. For the following steps, we’re going to say we made a $5 bet.
*If your first bet wins, you’ll now have $10. The next step is to make another unit-sized bet – in this example, $5 – to the money that’s already on the table. So, we’ll have $15 total on the table.
This is where the “3” comes from in the system – it’s 3x whatever your bet is.
*Say this bet wins, too – you’ll now have $30. The next step is a 2, which means we want to leave 2 units on the table, or in this case $10. So, remove $20 from your bet (leaving $10).
*We’re going to say this bet also wins. You’ll now have $20 on the table. But for the last step we want 6 units on the table. So, we need to add another $10 to make our total $30 ($5 x 6 units).
If you win this bet, you’ll have $60 on the table. You’ll want to remove this amount, and then on your next round you’ll start the cycle all over with the first step.
That’s all there is to it.
If you make $5 bets, follow this system, and are lucky enough to win 4 times in a row, you’ll have made $70. $60 of that will be profit, as you only made two $5 bets out of pocket (steps #1 and #2).
This is important to remember because whatever you decide your unit (bet sizing) will be, you’ll need to make sure you have the money to make it twice.
In other words, you don’t want your unit to be $100 if you only have a $150 bankroll. Because you’ll need $200 to get through steps #1 and #2.Progressive Betting System Roulette
Everything else will come out of your profits.There are exceptions to this. At a bare minimum you’ll need 2 units to use this system.

But in 1927, a group of entrepreneurs saw potential for more and developed a plan to create the largest amusement park in Texas. It was a lofty goal, but not unattainable, largely due to the massive popularity of the beach. Within a few short years, this afternoon swimming hole had become a full-on playground for all ages with a boardwalk, a wooden bathhouse, a swimming area, a large ballroom and plenty of rides. In addition to boasting the largest boardwalk west of Atlantic City, the park featured concession stands and games, a merry-go-round, the ’Bug-a-Boo’ tunnel train, and even a 300-pound caged gorilla named Big Boy, making this local swimming hole a total destination for families, oil magnates and cattle barons from all over.
But as it often does, the honeymoon phase eventually ended. During its second season, high winds during a storm caused a fire that burned down the ballroom, bathhouse and several concessions. But thanks to popular support-and insurance money-the park was rebuilt and eventually reopened in 1930. Times were tough and budgets were tight because of the Great Depression, but people still turned to Casino Park for entertainment.Lake Worth Beach Casino
Throughout the decade, Casino Beach grew in popularity-particularly the dancehall. Despite an increasing crop of bootleggers and nightclubs setting up shop along Jacksboro Highway, Casino Ballroom remained in a class of its own. It was so popular, in fact, that former heavyweight boxer Sully Montgomery was hired as a bouncer to ensure that there was no fighting. With more than 11,000 square feet of solid oak flooring, the dancehall would go on to attract some of the most popular musicians around the country, including Guy Lombardo, Tommy Dorsey, Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Harry James and Louis Armstrong. Ladies wore dresses, and gentlemen wore a suit and tie. And everyone made memories.
The beginning of the end came in the 1940s. During the annual beauty pageant on July 4, 1940, a portion of the boardwalk collapsed, injuring 64 people. Through years of ensuing legal battles, sections of the park were torn down. When a fire blazed through the beach and burned down the bathhouse in 1943, the swimming beach became a large liability. The dilapidated bathhouse was never rebuilt, and the City of Fort Worth eventually gained full ownership.
The second wind came the following year. When a plane made an emergency landing at nearby Meacham Field, passenger Jerry Starnes saw potential in the dusty, dilapidated ballroom he had heard so much about. He signed a lease with the city to take over Casino Beach, and in 1952 the park formally reopened with a new-and-improved (and fireproof) boardwalk-although plans to rebuild the amusement park and concession stands never materialized. The bathing beach beauty contest was revived in 1953, and the winner was awarded a large silver cup filled with silver dollars.
But as the years passed, so did people’s interest in big band music. By the 1970s, attention had shifted to television and rock and roll bands, and the ballroom was forced to close. The last tango took place Jan. 31, 1973. After watching a wrecking company tear apart the roof, Jerry Starnes and his partner danced over the dust and debris to Glenn Miller’s Sunset Serenade in honor of the thousands of couples who had come before them.
Today, there’s not much more to Casino Beach than a dredging station and an old boat ramp. There’s no running water, and the only entertainment value comes from things you bring yourself-maybe a frisbee and an ice chest. But by this time next year, this abandoned plot on the northwest corner of Lake Worth will be back to its former glory.
A Great Comeback
This year marks the 100th anniversary of Lake Worth, which was considered the largest municipal park in the world when it was filled on Aug. 10, 1914. Centennial events have been occurring since January, and continued festivities are sure to bring out a memory or two of lazy afternoons spent bathing on the beach and long nights spent waltzing and fox-trotting around the ballroom floor. But former and future guests have more than a centennial celebration to cheer about: Casino Beach is coming back.×
Talks began three years ago when Arlington-based Patterson Equity Partners were eyeing lease holds on Lake Worth. When the City of Fort Worth told them to ’think bigger,’ they thought Casino Beach. Now they have agreed to purchase 17 acres on Lake Worth, partnering with the City of Fort Worth to develop this lost-but-not-forgotten property. Here they will build restaurants, retail establishments, boat docks, an outdoor pavilion, an event hall and other recreational activities.
According to Patterson Equity Director Tyler Patterson, the total cost of this public-private partnership is $29 million, split between two phases. In what is called a 380 Agreement, Patterson Equity Partners will build and pay for the city’s improvements on the park land upfront, and the city will pay them back over 20 years. They’ve procured loans from Pinnacle Bank and hope to have the final deal signed, sealed and delivered by late summer or early fall.
’It’s like a domino set,’ Patterson Equity Director Jarod Cox says about finalizing the paperwork. ’This is the one that has to fall to put everything in motion.’
That’s where the hammers and nails come in-and once the building starts, they hope to have Casino Beach open within 12 months. But saying there’s still a lot to come is an understatement, according to Cox. ’I’d say we’re about halfway through the first quarter.’
With so much work ahead, it’s good to know that Patterson Equity Partners are not alone. Bob Crowe, co-chair of the Lake Worth Centennial Celebration Committee, calls the project a labor of love-and he has a personal stake in seeing the area come back to life. ’As a 10-year-old, it was a very joyful part of my childhood,’ he shares, recalling Casino Beach in the 1950s. ’My parents would dance. … There were these towers to jump off, a big sandy beach and boardwalk with hamburgers. This octopus ride was a hoot!’
But in addition to helping other families create their own memories, Crowe is eager to teach visitors about the rich history of the area. Around the time that Casino Beach first became popular, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) were hard at work building city parks and picnic tables around the lake, all as part of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal initiative to create jobs and develop natural resources. According to Crowe, many of them still remain.
’The whole idea is to celebrate the lake-to honor its past and protect its future,’ Crowe says. Part of that mission includes this year of celebratory events highlighting various recreational opportunities that exist on the lake, from waterskiing and mountain biking to Blue Angel air shows and firework displays. And starting next year, Casino Beach.×
Old Dog, New Tricks
For folks like Bob Crowe and Charles Mays, the rebirth of Casino Beach brings waves of nostalgia. But their stories are no longer destined to become relics, and the rest of us will soon be making our own memories.
’We want to build something that looks like the old Casino Beach but that has modern amenities,’ Cox shares. ’The best of the old with the best of the new.’
With blueprints drawn up by LBL Architects, Inc., plans for Phase 1 call for 20,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor restaurant space facing the water; an outdoor music pavilion with a restroom and concession building; a small boardwalk that could include games and a temporary Ferris wheel during the summer; and 196 covered boat slips, with courtesy boat slips for lake residents. Phase 2 will bring another 20,000 square feet of restaurant space, plus a dancehall/event center. Fuel will also be sold on the water, great news to the many boaters who have requested this over the years.
’There aren’t a lot of places in North Texas where you can sit by the water and have dinner,’ Cox notes. ’There’s just something about watching the boats going by while you eat a hamburger.’
Patterson Equity Partners are actively leasing the restaurant space right now, and potential vendors include a Mexican restaurant, a cheeseburger shop and a brewpub. To work off your meal, there are a host of aquatic activities (just be sure to wait 30 minutes!). Although swimming at the beach will not be encouraged, guests may be able to rent canoes or go paddleboarding. There may even be a human maze.
A grand vision like this one requires a great deal of patience and partnership; luckily, all of the players have plenty of both. In addition to working closely with the City of Fort Worth and the Centennial Celebration Committee, Patterson Equity Partners are developing the land to meet the goals of Lake Worth itself. According to the Lake Worth Vision Plan Executive Summary, ’The Casino Beach area in the town center sector will be redeveloped as a mixed-use, recreation-oriented environment with a distinct sense of place. A compact, walkable mix of restaurants, specialty retail establishments, water-oriented recreation and perhaps some higher-density housing or lodging facilities would be an appropriate future for the Casino Beach area.’
Crowe points out that ’a lot of stars are coming into alignment’-and that’s an understatement.
The City of Fort Worth is already hard at work on the infrastructure. Dredging of the lake is almost complete, and construction has begun on fresh water and sewer lines to the site, according to Councilman Dennis Shingleton, an active supporter of the project. Costs associated with the infrastructure are funded by proceeds from gas drilling under the lake, he says, and there is a group working to increase the capacity of nearby Jacksboro Highway.
In the end, all the hard work will be worth it, Shingleton believes.
’We are continuing to grow, and a significant part of that growth is in the northwest. This will enhance that,’ he envisions, adding that the project will be a major economic boon for the area.
As it stands now, not many people think of Lake Worth as the premier recreational destination it once was. But in addition to a revitalized Casino Beach, a fluke of geography could just help bring the crowds back. According to Managing Partner Mike Patterson, Lake Worth will maintain a constant water level, unlike nearby lakes that may rise and fall due to drought. Among other things, this makes him confident that Lake Worth will no longer be the red-headed stepchild of aquatic recreation in North Texas.
As it always was, Casino Beach is sure to be a destination for people from all over-not just locals. With a state as big as Texas, it’s not always easy to make the long journey south to Corpus Christi or even Galveston-but Casino Beach brings the sand and sun to Tarrant County. You can see the property from Jacksboro Highway, the old ’9-mile-bridge’ that takes visitors to the heart of downtown Fort Worth. It’s that close, yet many long-term residents may not even know the area’s past-or its future.
’Lake Worth has such a history that a lot of people don’t know about,’ says Tyler Patterson. ’When you think of Fort Worth music, you think Billy Bob’s.’ But once Casino Beach reopens, you could be literally walking-or dancing-in the footsteps of Sinatra.
And that is something to write home about.

The Casino Ballroom attracted plenty of attention in size alone in the Lake Worth community. Standing at more than 31,000 square feet, the ballroom was a grand structure that was like a huge welcome sign to entertainment seekers approaching the shores of Lake Worth.
“Casino Beach Partygoers” – This is a typical scene at the Casino Ballroom on any Wednesday night in 1958. That’s when the ballroom’s flourishing “Over 30” Club gathers, a boon to lonely strangers in the city and to married couples who refuse to surrender to the rocking chair. Membership in two years has soared to 3,500.
But add a band of musicians and a couple of thousand people who came to listen, dance and socialize and the ballroom became the liveliest venue in Tarrant County for 45 years.Lake Worth Casino Shops Las Vegas Strip
The Casino Ballroom was a tour stop for many popular singers, musicians, and bands and was packed with revelers night after night. The ballroom had an open-air dance area that could hold 2,200 people. It cooled off warm nights with light breezes blowing in from the waters of Lake Worth just a short walk from the ballroom.
Couples swooned, swayed, juked and jived to some of the greatest music ever heard just a few hundred yards northwest of the Lake Worth city limits from 1928 to 1973.
And some couples were on their way to falling in love at the ballroom.
“My memory of the night is that I got to dance with Gary for the first time,” Lake Worth High School graduate Mikell Pruitt Robinson, who recalled her first dance with her future husband before they dating in the early 1960s. “It wasn’t a date, but we were both there with groups of friends. Maybe the stars in my eyes are why I don’t remember anything else.”
With the ballroom’s opening, suddenly the tiny Lake Worth community had a booming business that carried more than 500 jobs. The little town’s population at the time could not fill all the positions. But the ballroom’s popularity brought a population boost as employees sought housing near their jobs. This spurred the development of the Indian Oaks neighborhood in the community.
The Casino Ballroom’s heyday was during the late 1920s through the early 1950s. It attracted many of the big-name bands in the nation and had its own nationally known radio show. The ballroom could seat 2,200 people for partying and offered a hot meal for $2.00 brought from its full-service kitchen.
Patrons could order adult beverages from two bars in the ballroom. Underneath the ballroom, there was an icehouse on one end that Fort Worth Ice Company owned. On the other end was the boiler room. In the middle were the tracks from the Bug-A-Boo train that started its run from the Casino Beach Amusement Park next to the ballroom.
But the heart of the ballroom was the often-crowded dance floor. Couples showed off their dancing moves on a smooth floor made of 2-foot-by-2-inch strips of solid oak. The bandstand and stage were lively with the likes of marquee performers whose hit music flowed on national radio airwaves.
C.C. Smith, a retired railroad man, is well past the minimum age of the Casino’s “Over 30” Club, but nobody out dances him. Above, Smith swings Mayme Corley through a foxtrot to the music of the Guy Woodward, Jr. Orchestra.
Over the years, guests enjoyed the tunes of singers, musicians, and bandleaders that were the marquee names of their day. There were Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey, Herbie Kay, Rudy Valle, and Ted Weems.
Then there were Wayne King, Jan Garber, Artie Shaw, Bob Crosby, Ozzie, and Harriet Nelson, Art Castle, Ray McKinley, Hogan Hancock, Ben Bernie, Tex Beneke and movie stars Frank Sinatra and Dorothy Lamour.
Since the best performers played the ballroom, it was expected that the customers be dressed at their best. Men wore coats and ties and ladies wore dresses. In the 1920s, “flappers” with silk stockings rolled below their knees snapped their fingers to the Cha

You are going to be playing premium hands. Of course you will be playing your Aces, Kings, Queens, Jacks but it is with these hands that you will be raising with preflop. Your suited connectors and small pairs is what you will be limping in with. All other hands should be played rarely such as your Ace 7, suited but not connected cards, and in general those type of hands.2. How To Play Aces, Kings, and Queens / Big Pairs
This is where the so called tight but aggressive style comes in. You are going to be raising hard with these type of hands. If someone raises before you, go ahead and re-raise. A good notion to go by is that 10% of your stack is considered to be a large raise. Go ahead and raise that much with this type of hand.
It is critical to understand that big pairs is not where you will win your most money. This is a very common misconception and you should play to get as few callers as possible.3. Big Pairs After The Flop
You’ve raised the pot pre-flop so hopefully you will only have 1 or possibly two players left in the hand. If you consistently get more than 1 or 2 players calling you with your big pairs pre flop then you are not raising enough. It is ideal to only have a few players call to the flop.
When the board flops and you still feel you have the best hand do not slow play. The pot should be large enough to take at this point. Go ahead and bet at minimum the size of the pot. Your whole goal with large pairs is going to be this. Get as much money of theirs in the pot pre-flop and take down the pot after the flop. We do not want to see the turn or river. As Doyle Brunson says, “Its better to win a small pot than lose a big one.”4. Suited Connectors
You will learn to love these cards. Personally I get more excited when I get these type of hands than big pairs. Your pay-outs with these hands are very large when played correctly.
The overall strategy is to limp in with your suited connectors against your average player. Many times players will slow play their big pairs letting you catch something on the flop. This is why you should almost never slow play your big pairs.
If you hit your hand with your suited connectors then you should bet quite large. Most players don’t look for straights. The average player is watching out for flushes and big pairs so when you hit your straight you can be sure to get paid off. If you have an ace on the flop or on the board at all you should bet slightly larger than normal hoping your opponent has an ace. If you get called you know they have an ace so keep firing next betting round.5. Small Pairs Are God
You can go ahead and put the suited connectors and your small pairs in the same category. It is with these hands that you will make an extremely large amount of money with. Over 3 years we believe the best strategy is to just limp in with these hands.
You can call a small raise with your small pairs but anything near a 10% raise should not be called. In cases where you think your opponent may have aces or kings and they are not one to fold them then you can go ahead and call any moderate raise in hoping to double up against their big pair.
Once you hit your set you are going to pay careful attention to what is on the board. For the most part someone ideally hit top pair and you should bet with moderately high raises. If you do not hit your set just go ahead and dump your hand.6. Flush DrawsNo Limit Texas Holdem Poker Tournament Strategy
When playing weak opponents it is good to go ahead and semi bluff your flush draw. A semi bluff means that you are betting into the pot hoping to win it right there. If you get called you still have a lot of outs to make the best hand. A weak player will usually just call even if they have top pair letting you draw into your hand for cheap.7. Straight Draws
Straight draws are disguised a little more than flush draws and you can expect to make more from straights than flushes. It is much easier for you to just call or check with your straight draws and go undetected. If someone is betting into you it is best to just call with a straight draw.No Limit Texas Holdem Tournament Strategy
Some straight draws you really shouldn’t even play at all. An example of this is when you hold something like 6,7 and the board comes 8,9,J. At this point you have an open ended straight draw but really your only chance in the hand is to catch a 5. If a ten comes that will also give you a straight but you will have the sucker straight. Your opponent will only need to have a Queen and you staight is no good. These types of draws should be let go if you are under pressure.8. Trash Hands
Bad players wonder why they consistently lose. It is because they play trash hands. They will slowly lose money with these cards and consistently get out-kicked. These type of hands are the Ace X, J 3, King 5, and garbage like that. Be patient and do not play these hands or you will lose in the long run.

These gaming compacts permit non-video Class III Vegas-style, games-of-chance, slot machines. However, blackjack and non-banked card games such as poker and video games-of-chance are explicitly restricted. Also banned are electronic video games like video poker, video keno, video slots, and others.
The gaming compacts stipulate the Minnesota Department of Public Safety is responsible for the inspection and approval of these video gaming machines. Both parties agreed that the compacts should be effective in perpetuity but re-negotiations can occur if desired by both parties.
